The G9 took me completely by surprise -- and I know I'm not the only one. More surprising is that in the G9 Panasonic has created an entirely new body, a flagship camera aimed at still photographers -- yet using the same 20.3 mp sensor and processor as in the GH5 at almost the same moment that Sony announced its 42+ mp a7r III. More surprising still is that Panasonic wants to take on Sony's $4,500 a9 in the professional sports and wildlife market (A9, G9, hmm...), and among other interesting twists offers 20 frames per second burst rate with full AF and AE for just over one third the price ($1700). Most surprising? They're launching the camera with the kind of lens Sony DIDN'T launch with the a9: a 200mm f/2.8 prime (400mm full frame equivalent, shipping with a 1.4x teleconverter and with an optional 2x teleconverter promised) for a very un-MFT like price of $3,000. Both the G9 and the 200/2.8 will be available in January, 2018. I am FASCINATED by this camera, and have one to play with for a bit as this video is being published. Stay tuned!
